Inaugurated in 2017, National Museum of Charkha is a window to the great heritage of Indian Charkha, embodying the philosophy of self-reliance.
The museum reflects the history of India, which became symbol of Nationalism, freedom movement, and empowerment of the individual citizen by weaving Swadeshi cloth.
The Museum showcases 14 vintage Charkha models and demonstrates the journey from "kapaas" to yarn to khadi cloth. The Museum also displays the charkha used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ludhiana where he distributed 500 charkhas to the women of Punjab in 2016. The charkha is 26 feet (8 meters) long and 13 feet (4 meters) high chromium stainless steel spinning wheel. It is weighing five tons and there is no effect of heat on it. Also it is rust resistant and non-magnetic. This Charkha is the world's largest spinning wheel.
